Mount Kenya is the highest peak in Kenya and the second highest
peak in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain is located
in central Kenya, just south of the equator and it is around
150 kms. away from Nairobi in the north-north easterly direction.
Legend of Mount Kenya
To the ancient Kikuyu and Kamba tribesmen, the peaks of Mount
Kenya, when viewed from a distance resembled the black and
white plumage of the male ostrich.
The black and white formations were actually rocks and glaciers
on the peak area. The tribesmen hence named the mountain "Kirinyaga"
which in translation means - "the area of the ostrich".
In fact from this name they derive the term for their god
- Mwene Nyaga- signifying the god who stayed at the top of
Mount Kenya. The Kikuyu believe that Mount Kenya is a sacred
place and they turn towards the direction of the mountain
while praying or offering sacrifices.
The Kambas had a different pronunciation for the mount and
called it "Kinyaa" Since the Kamba's were the first
people to encounter the European explorers, the Europeans
used the Kamba version to name the mountain - Mount Kenya!
Later, the country was named after the mountain.
Climbing Mount Kenya
Mountain trekkers reach Point Lenana - the third highest peak
at 4985 metres quite easily though climbing the twin summits
of Batian and Nelion require technical climbing on rock or
ice.
Over the years discoverers and surveyors have searched for
the most ideal and passable areas on these ridges and have
come up with different routes to connect to the summit circuit
- the trail that circles all the major peaks of the mountain.
Base Camp Naro Moru River Lodge.
